Saris Children's Folk Group Comes to Johnstown
By Erika & Milenka Kopanic
On Sunday May 21st, American Slovaks of Johnstown, Pennsylvania welcomed Detsky Folklorny Subor (Children’s Folk Group)
for an exciting traditional Slovak folk performance. These teen performers from Šariš County in Slovakia put on
a memorable show with traditional song and dance from their region.
We interviewed the group after their performance to have a closer look at the young people since it was their first time in
the United States. Although they said their time was limited due to a busy dancing schedule combined with schoolwork while
on the road, they were still able to take time to learn a little about America. They stated that the food and cars were probably
the most different aspects about this country in comparison to Slovakia. When they talked about their impression of typical
American life, they had found that the United States was less fast-paced than Europe. Interestingly, we found just the opposite
in our own travels in Europe. They also found Americans to be very kind, hospitable and helpful.
Some of the things they miss from Slovakia while traveling include their family and friends, traditional Slovak food (especially
Brynžove Haluški), and even their computers. Several of them showed interest in returning to the United States again,
hopefully to further their education in one of our universities. Who knows what great achievements lay ahead for this group
of bright teenagers.
